War Dragon - Fantasy Meets a Harsh New Reality

back to the last dragon on to the next dragon

Red Skull Dragon by Vincent Hie

War Dragon is the most powerful fantasy image in The Mountain's 2010 catalog, and perhaps our most disturbing shirt ever. There are other shirts in our Dark Fantasy section that might be considered more shocking in a traditional horror sense (certainly more gorey). But this skillful blending of a black dragon with World War I images of falling bombs, soldiers in gas masks, and graves hits home on a much more personal level.
It is precisely the fusion of the Fantasy art with the real world that makes this image so powerful. Normally there is an emotional refuge in knowing that fantasy artwork is from another world, another universe. No matter how realistically rendered a fire breathing dragon is, we can be reasonably confident that we will not encounter one. Through the ages war has always been a possibility, and usually a reality, that is always cruel and horrific in ways that trumps mere nightmares.
In War Dragon, the skulls bridge the two worlds: the skull pile behind the dragon clearly belongs to the realm of fantasy, while the hatched skull in the far background (and which ties the whole image together) speaks to the ultimate and timeless reality of war.

Evolution of a Dragon

Blue Dragon was Romas Kukalis' first dragon for The Mountain, or at least the first one we know of.
Black Dragon was the original art on which this updated image was based. That shirt remains our all-time best-selling shirt from The Mountain.
Black Dragon was borrowed and adapted once before, evolving into a dragon out of Celtic legend in Celtic Cross Dragon. Looking closely, you can see that the dragon has been redrawn, it was not merely pasted to create this non-traditional Celtic dragon.
