The Shetland Sheepdog was bred on the Shetland Islands, off the coast of northern Scotland. The breed has its early roots as far back as the 15th century when Scottish Border Collies were imported to the islands and bred with local dogs. Thanks to the often-harsh environment Shelties are an exceptionally hardy breed: their thick double coat is perfect for Scotland's often cold and wet climate. Intelligent, agile, hard-working, and affectionate, the Sheltie is not only an excellent working dog, but is also very well-suited to family life.
