The German Shepherd Dog (aka Alsatian) is a surprisingly recent breed. Though based largely on established shepherding dogs found in Germany, it wasn't until the very late nineteenth, and early twentieth, centuries that the breed was engineered as we know it today. German Shepherds are certainly one of the most versatile and intelligent dog breeds ever. Not only do they excell at a wide variety of important jobs, including rescue, guide, police, and shepherding, but Alsatians make exceptional companions. Perhaps no other breed has done more to help mankind, not bad for such a youngster!
