| The Doberman Pinscher is a masterpiece of selective breeding. This exceptionally intelligent working breed owes its lineage to German tax collector, Louis Dobermann, who needed protection on his unpopular rounds. As a result of his careful work in the 1890s with several source breeds (including Rottweiler, Greyhound, German Pinscher) and select mutts, the Doberman Pinscher (or Dobermann) is the premiere guard dog to this day. The Doberman's intelligent, alert, loyal, and watchful nature has also made it one of the two or three breeds most favored by the police and military. A devoted breed, they are excellent companion dogs for adults, and Doberman Pinschers can even be decent family pets, if trained from a very young age (though care still needs to be taken with unfamiliar and loud children). |
