Hey Bulldog! The name usually refers to the English Bulldog: though there is a smaller related French breed, it is the heavier British version that most people think of. Both breeds originated in England by the 17th century for the "sport" of bull baiting. The English Bulldog has since evolved (through careful breeding) significantly over the centuries from an aggressive and agile animal suited to tackling a bull, to the more gentle, brave, and affectionate animal which now makes an exceptional family pet.
