The Basset Hound is of French extraction, dating back as far as the 16th century. Bred as a scent dog for hunting, Basset Hounds were ideal to the task: low to the ground with an exceptional nose (second only to their ancestor, the Bloodhound). To this day, Bassets remains fascinated by scents often following them doggedly to the exclusion of all else. This gentle breed is typically devoted and affectionate, and is very well-suited to family life. The Basset Hound is a remarkably well-rounded canine, demonstrated by the fact that they are competitive in all four disciplines: conformation, obedience, tracking, and field trials.
